Plant Right for Tree Success

Selecting the correction location

Whether planting in containers or in the ground, select a location that allows for the best possible care and protection of your trees.  Remember that dwarf trees only grow to the size of a large bush.  Therefore, they may be planted in very small spaces, close together and often espaliered against wooden fences or trellises.

Cutting corners at this point will bring you less than optimum results.

FOR LARGE CONTAINERS, approximately 25-to-30-gallon size, you will need about three bags of high quality organic potting soil as sold at Isle of Sky Nursery.

FOR “IN GROUND” PLANTING plan to add half a bag of high quality organic potting soil to mix with the backfill and the fertilizer.

In addition to potting soil, each tree will need appropriate organic fertilizer amendments.

We use and recommend state of the art organic fertilizer technology that includes a base nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium (NPK) fortified with broad spectrum biologicals and trace minerals, high in amorphous silicon.

CONTAINER Plants:

  • We amend heavily, minimum of 5-6 lbs per 25-30 lb container. Remember folks, the container is a confined space so the plant needs everything you can give it right up front.

IN-GROUND Planting:

  • You plant a tree once - GET IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME!

  • We recommend digging a generous hole, the shape of a salad bowl as opposed to straight sided, and adding half a bag of potting soil and 6-8 lbs fertilizer well incorporated into the backfill.

All amendments and organic fertilizers are available at Isle of Sky Nursery, our products represent the most advanced sustainable soil and plant technology today.
